Goodbye! Omegle: Popular Chat Platform Going to Shutting Down Forever After 14 Years

Omegle Shut Down News: Omegle, the chat platform running for 14 years, suddenly closed down. In a message on the website, founder Leif K-Brooks mentioned on Wednesday that dealing with the platform’s issues made it too hard, both financially and emotionally, to keep it going.

“I started Omegle when I was 18 and still living with my parents. I wanted it to capture the things I loved about the Internet, bringing in a kind of social spontaneity I thought was missing elsewhere. If the Internet is like a ‘global village,’ Omegle was supposed to be like walking down a street in that village, chatting with people you meet along the way,” he wrote.

RIP Omegle (2009-2023)

“Unfortunately, what’s right doesn’t always win. I really wish things were different, but the stress and cost of this fight, along with the existing stress and cost of running Omegle and dealing with its misuse, are just too much. Running Omegle is not doable anymore, both financially and mentally. Honestly, I don’t want to have a heart attack in my 30s,” he added.

After the announcement, many users shared their feelings on social media about the sudden shutdown. “It’s the end of an era… Thank you Omegle for the years of fun and smiles. So crazy,” one person wrote. Another said, “Omegle has been a journey of ups and downs for me, but I’ve had a blast making content on it. I’ve met some of the most wonderful people on Omegle, and it’s sad to see it go.”

“RIP Omegle, I think it officially shut down after 14 years. It literally stopped while I was recording a video,” another person wrote.
