US Navy: Sea Pay Chart 2024

The main income for service members is known as basic pay, which depends on their pay grade, position, and length of service. Additionally, military personnel may receive extra compensation based on their specialization, qualifications, and duty station. There are also tax-free allowances that can significantly contribute to their overall compensation.

The annual pay increase for military members is designed to closely align with the national growth in private sector wages and salaries. This increase is determined by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Cost Index, calculated multiple times each year. The military looks at the October ECI year-over-year change to calculate the percentage pay increase for the upcoming year. Recently, President Joe Biden announced a 4.6% increase in the defence salary budget for 2023, benefiting U.S. Navy personnel.

In addition to US Navy sea pay, there is a sea pay premium, which serves as supplementary compensation for extended periods of continuous sea service. A member eligible for career sea pay, having completed 36 consecutive months of sea duty, becomes eligible for the 37th and subsequent months of sea duty premium.

Reserve Pay for the US Navy

Reserve members receive less compensation compared to full-time employees due to their limited time commitment, which typically involves weekends and specific training sessions. This type of compensation, along with other payments for specific tasks, is often referred to as “drill pay.”

Reserve personnel play a crucial role by supplementing the active-duty U.S. military during times of necessity. If activated or placed on active service, reserve members’ “drill pay” is replaced with the same monthly pay schedule as their active-duty counterparts.

Federal & Retirement Pay Scale for the US Navy

To boost the skills and tenure of individuals recruited and retained in the US military, the United States has introduced a system of benefits known as military retirement. Retired service members, due to their eligibility for recall, receive retainer payments.

These payments are based on the Federal Retirement pay scale. Typically, personnel serve for about 30 years in the military. Therefore, the pay scale bracket for 30+ years is applicable to those who have retired from the services and are entitled to a Retirement pay scale. You can refer to the table above to assess your retirement pay scale based on the rank from which you will be retiring.
