Chandigarh Rock Garden History

The Rock Garden in Chandigarh has an interesting story. It all started with Nek Chand Saini, who was a road inspector. While working, he used to collect broken tiles, bangles, glass, and rocks from construction sites. Nek Chand loved to make things from waste. So, in 1957, he began making sculptures secretly in a gorge near Sukhna Lake.

He worked quietly for more than ten years, using his free time to build his sculptures. He turned a rocky area into a place with lovely paths, waterfalls, an amphitheater, and thousands of sculptures made from recycled stuff. His art showed people, animals, and different shapes, showing his love for nature and our culture.

In the late 1960s, officials found this secret garden. At first, they didn’t like it because it was made without permission. But then, they saw how beautiful and important it was. So, in 1976, the Rock Garden was opened for everyone.

After it became official, Nek Chand got help to make the garden bigger and better. He and his team added more parts, sculptures, and water designs. Today, the Rock Garden is a famous place in Chandigarh, with many visitors coming to see it.
